Turbo timer how long

The reason is, after that much time, your oil pressure gets SO LOW and actually starves the turbo for oil. If you've ever taken an oil pressure test in your head, its less then 10psi at idle. Having water flow through a turbo will cool it a lot more then just running oil. The best, HANDS DOWN way to cool your turbo off is to take it easy for the last 5 minutes or so of your drive, then let the car cool for 30 seconds for normal driving, a minute for spirited driving, and a minute and a half if you're really beating on the thing.

Flame all you want, but the best turbo minds in the world not me, I just follow them agree, letting your car idle for that long is horrible. I agree you don't drive WOT into you driveway normally it's down a residetial street for a few minuted which is plenty of time for the turbo to cool down I don't ever use my TT anymore.

It just looks pretty. I let Idle 30sec after mornal driving and after hard driving. I idle it down long enough to get the oil temp back down to where it will stay when idling That means about 30 seconds after driving around town oil temp , after getting right off the e-way usually temp. A while back I put an uncharacteristically long speil on one board about how I rigged up water cooling to a GT28RS on an FJ20 , when I mentioned that you could easily hear water boiling in its jacket turbo after shut down people there had hysterics.

I could not make them understand that it was set to allow the steam bubbles to travel up the water outlet pipe into the heads highest point , just inside of the thermostat , out the top hose to the radiators top tank and via the rad cap to the overflow tank. It only did this for the minutes that was needed for the coolant to drop the turbos cooling jacket basically bearing housing temperature below deg C.

The turbos water inlet was plumbed into the blocks coolant drain bung hole which is often the lowest part of the engines cooling system. Cooler water is denser and heavier than warmer water so it made sense to get water from this point. It thermosyphoned perfectly and worked automatically. As Corky Bell said manufacturers fit them because Joe average wood duck refuses to use good oil and change it often and demands to be able to exit his mobile kelvinator which afterall is just another house hold appliance in his eyes post haste.

Waiting around for the pesky hair dryer to compose itself is for squares man. The turbo timer is a marketing tool to separate you from your money. The water cooling system is used to prevent the turbos centre section from getting hot enough to be a reliability issue. Manufacturers have to put warranty on their cars so reliability is important. When you are driving 'on the turbo' exhaust temp can go to degrees. Posted October 29, HRthirtyone Posted October 29, Bl4cK32 Posted October 29, Posted October 29, edited.

Complete waste of petrol and unsafe. MBS Posted October 29, Instead, a turbo timer works by keeping the engine running a while longer before it is switched off. We all know engine oil is designed to lubricate engine parts, prevent deposit buildup and remove harmful contaminants by suspending them.

Now, the turbochargers are also cooled using the engine oil. The idea of a turbo timer is to keep the engine running, so that oil continues to circulate.

Most regular drivers will never drive their cars hard enough to require such a device. Especially when they talk about carbon deposits and a failed turbocharger. Well, if you do plan on heavily modifying your car, then sure.

The workshop doing the tuning will probably recommend that you install one as well. Stiffer fines for repeat offenders who leave engines idling.
